How I approach my work
If I had to sum up what I try to achieve in my work in a single word it would be texture. Or maybe depth. Okay, let's go with 2 words. Texture and depth. For the most part, my paintings grow layer by layer, with fragments of the underlaying layers surviving and poking through, fighting to get forward. Thats why so many of them end up looking nothing like what I set out to achieve initially. But thats the interesting thing about it, watching them evolve, take on a life of their own and become something quite different to what I intended. Just like bringing up children, really, only less expensive and not half as stressful.
Substances that aren't supposed to mix always appeal as they can produce unexpected and interesting results. Oils used with acrylics, white spirits, linseed oil, sand, coffee, paint stripper, anything that comes to hand, the list of possibilities is endless. Sometimes it feels more like alchemy than painting and one of these days I may very well blow myself up. That could produce some interesting results, actually.
Some smaller paintings come together quite quickly - one or two sessions of a couple of hours. More often than not, though, they take weeks. I normally have 2 or 3 pieces happening at any given time and I'll work on the one that feels right.
